Robert Kozol is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Biological Sciences at St. John's College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, St. John's University. His research focuses on evolutionary neurobiology using the blind Mexican cavefish (Astyanax mexicanus) to study how genetic and neuronal changes influence behavior. He holds a B.S. from the University of Rhode Island (2005-2009), a Ph.D. from the University of Miami (2013-2019), and completed a postdoctoral fellowship at Florida Atlantic University (2019-2023).
- Research Interests: Evolution of behavior, sensorimotor integration, brain homeostasis, and genetic mapping of traits in cavefish.
- Key Model: Uses cavefish hybrids to explore genetic bases of reduced sleep, stress, social behavior, and sensory adaptations.
He teaches courses including Molecular Neuroscience, Introductory Neurobiology, and Anatomy & Physiology lab. His lab, the Kozol Lab, is detailed at https://a-cavefishneuroevoluti.vev.site/lab-website.
