استاد · Evolutionary Developmental Biology
University of Maryland, College Parkمعرفی
William Jeffery is a Distinguished University Professor and Affiliate Professor of Cell Biology and Molecular Genetics at the University of Maryland. His research focuses on evolutionary developmental biology using Astyanax mexicanus (cavefish) and ascidians like Ciona intestinalis as model systems. His work explores mechanisms underlying eye degeneration, pigment loss, and regeneration in cavefish, alongside studying stem cell dynamics and aging in ascidians. Jeffery holds a Ph.D. in Biology from the University of Iowa (1971).
He has received prestigious awards including AAAS Fellowship and the Alexander Kowalevsky Medal. His lab investigates genetic and environmental factors driving trait evolution in subterranean species, emphasizing convergent evolution and ecological adaptation. Key research areas include hypoxia adaptation, Sonic Hedgehog signaling pathways, and the role of chaperone genes in regeneration. Jeffery collaborates globally on cave biodiversity preservation and has authored over 150 publications, including landmark studies on cavefish genetics and ascidian regeneration mechanisms.
