Dr. Robert Knifton is a University Academic Fellow (UAF) in Critical Studies in Museums at the University of Leeds, School of Fine Art, History of Art and Cultural Studies. His work bridges academic research with practical museum collaborations, focusing on sensory environments of museums, digital archiving, and the intersection of art education with social issues. He holds a BA in Politics & Modern History (University of Manchester), an MA in Art Gallery & Museum Studies (University of Manchester), and an AHRC Collaborative Doctoral Award.
Research interests include heritage preservation, popular culture curation, and the creative application of archival materials. Notable projects include the AHRC-funded Life on the Outskirts (2018–present), exploring innovative uses of small creative archives in art education, and the Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF)-supported restoration of the 1970s Chilean political mural Y Habra Trabajo Para Todos in Yorkshire. He also contributed to the UK Parliament’s First Waves project (2018), examining the legacy of race relations legislation.
Teaching responsibilities include Programme Director for the MA Art Gallery and Museum Studies, along with modules in Arts Management, Heritage Studies, and BA Fine Art professional practice. Collaborative research partnerships include the Helen Storey Foundation and the School of Law at Leeds.
