Robert Kennedy is a Lecturer in the Department of Linguistics at the University of California, Santa Barbara (UCSB), affiliated with the College of Letters and Science. His research focuses on phonology, morphology, and phonetics, with specialization in reduplication patterns, vowel inventories in English dialects, and the sociolinguistics of names and sports terminology.
Education: Ph.D. in Linguistics from the University of Arizona (2003).
Research interests include morpho-prosodic alignment in reduplication, phonetic correlates of vowel contrasts in California English dialects, and the interplay between linguistic structure and social context in sports language. He also explores the form/function relationships in nicknames and their cultural significance. Current projects address allomorphy in reduplication systems, register variations in sports discourse, and phonological effects on phonetic phenomena.
Publications span theoretical phonology and applied sociolinguistics, including work on Sanskrit reduplication, vowel shift patterns, and lexical innovation in sports. His methods integrate acoustic analysis, typological comparison, and corpus-based approaches.
Teaching responsibilities include courses on introductory linguistics, language and society, phonetics, and specialized topics like language and sports.
