Viola Giulia Miglio is a Professor in the Department of Spanish and Portuguese at the University of California, Santa Barbara (UCSB). She holds the prestigious Barandiarán Endowed Chair of Basque Studies and heads the Department's Program in Hispanic Linguistics and Phonetics Lab. Her research focuses on phonetics/phonology, language change, translation, and Basque Studies.
Education:

Her work spans Romance languages (Spanish, Northern Italian dialects), Icelandic, and Basque, with a particular interest in markedness and faithfulness in vowel systems. She is currently collaborating on a book about Basque whaling in 17th-century Iceland and co-authoring the Íslensk-spænsk orðabók (Icelandic-Spanish Dictionary).
