Robert J. Straka serves as Professor and Department Head of the Department of Experimental and Clinical Pharmacology within the University of Minnesota College of Pharmacy. With a PharmD from the University of Minnesota and post-doctoral training in cardiovascular pharmacokinetics from the University of Tennessee, he has established himself as a leading researcher in pharmacogenomics and personalized medicine.
His research focuses on the intersection of genetics and drug response, particularly examining how genetic variations affect responses to lipid-lowering medications. Dr. Straka has developed expertise in cardiovascular pharmacogenomics, with significant contributions to understanding the genetic determinants of triglyceride metabolism and responses to fenofibrate therapy. His work extends to community-based approaches for advancing personalized medicine in underserved populations, with particular emphasis on Hmong communities in the United States.
Analysis of his recent publications reveals a strong trend toward applying advanced data science techniques to pharmacological questions, particularly using electronic health records to develop phenotyping algorithms for statin-associated muscle symptoms and other drug responses. His research spans basic pharmacogenomics, clinical applications, and community-based implementation of personalized medicine approaches.
Dr. Straka has secured significant funding from multiple sources including NIH, American Heart Association, American College of Clinical Pharmacy, and Abbott Laboratories. His major projects include investigating genetic and environmental determinants of triglycerides, pharmacogenetics of drug transporters, and community-based approaches to personalized medicine in underserved populations.
He maintains active research collaborations across multiple institutions and has contributed to over 100 research publications throughout his career, with continued productivity evident through multiple publications in 2023-2024. His laboratory work focuses on translating pharmacogenomic discoveries into clinical practice, with particular attention to diverse patient populations.
