معرفی
Janne Backman is a Professor in the Department of Clinical Pharmacology at the University of Helsinki's Faculty of Medicine. He serves as a Supervisor in both the Doctoral Programme in Clinical Research and the Doctoral Programme in Drug Research. His work focuses on understanding individual variability in drug response and developing personalized drug therapy approaches.
His primary research interests include clinical pharmacology, pharmacogenetics, drug metabolism, cytochrome P450 enzymes, drug transporters, drug-drug interactions, and pharmacokinetics. He has made significant contributions to understanding how genetic variations affect drug metabolism and response, particularly for cardiovascular medications and statins.
Analysis of his recent publications reveals a consistent focus on pharmacogenomics, with particular emphasis on cytochrome P450 enzymes, drug transporters, and their impact on drug metabolism. His work combines clinical studies with genetic analyses to develop more personalized approaches to drug therapy, especially in cardiovascular and metabolic diseases.
Scientific Awards:
- Highly Cited Researcher (Pharmacology & Toxicology), Thomson Reuters, 2015
- Membership in Finnish Academy of Science and Letters, April 2019
Professor Backman has led numerous significant research projects including JUSELIUS 22-25 and JUSELIUS 25-28 focusing on individualized drug therapy, the ERC-funded TransporterPGx project investigating transporters' role in drug response variability, and earlier work on cytochrome P450 enzyme inhibition and drug interactions. His research has resulted in over 245 publications and substantial contributions to clinical pharmacology.
He is actively involved in academic supervision, peer review, committee work, and has participated in numerous conferences and seminars as both organizer and speaker. His work bridges basic pharmacological research with clinical applications to improve drug therapy outcomes.
