Professor Robert Hazell is a semi-retired academic and constitutional expert at University College London (UCL), where he holds the personal chair of Professor of Government and the Constitution. He has served as Director of the Constitution Unit, a leading institution for constitutional research. His career spans academia, civil service, and philanthropy, including roles at the Home Office, Nuffield Foundation, and UCL.
Robert’s research focuses on constitutional reform, devolution, electoral systems, and the role of monarchy. He has led major projects such as the Dynamics of Devolution (1999–2005) and studies on parliamentary reform, judicial independence, and freedom of information’s impact on governance. He advises governments and international bodies on constitutional matters and writes regularly for media outlets like Prospect.
Key awards include a CBE (2006) and the Political Studies Association Communication Award (2009). His work has influenced policies such as the creation of the Electoral Commission and the UK Supreme Court. He has authored/co-authored over 20 books and numerous articles, including recent works on monarchy governance, prerogative reform, and constitutional futures.
