Robert Gold was an Associate Professor of Classics at the University of Winnipeg, affiliated with United College, from 1969 until his retirement in 1995. He was honored as a Fellow of United College in 1997 for his distinguished contributions to teaching and scholarship. Born in Ottawa, Gold earned a B.A. (Hons.) and M.A. in Classics from McGill University, followed by a Ph.D. from the University of Wisconsin in 1974. His teaching career began at United College in 1960, after which he briefly taught at the University of New Brunswick before returning to Winnipeg.
Gold was renowned for his passionate and engaging teaching style, particularly in areas like Classical Art and Architecture, Greek language, and ancient literature. He received the Clifford J. Robson Memorial Award for Teaching Excellence in 1978, reflecting his profound impact on students. Colleagues and students alike celebrated his ability to make ancient subjects lively and accessible, fostering a lifelong love for Classics among generations of learners.
Post-retirement, Gold continued lecturing at the Winnipeg Art Gallery and for senior groups, leading to the establishment of the Robert Gold Prize in Ancient Art and Architecture by the Seniors Winnipeg Arts Group. His legacy is marked by humor, intellectual generosity, and a dedication to education, as remembered in testimonials and the University’s tribute during his Fellowship ceremony.
