Dr. Robert Gallen serves as Associate Professor of Psychology and Masters’ Program Coordinator for the Applied Developmental Psychology Program at the University of Pittsburgh School of Education. A Licensed Psychologist with over 25 years of clinical experience, he is a nationally recognized leader in infant and early childhood mental health systems development across Pennsylvania.
His academic credentials include a Ph.D. from the University of Kentucky (1997), internship at the University of Texas Health Science Center, and post-doctoral fellowship at Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Center for Developmental Disorders. He has served as a Part C Early Intervention provider since 1998 through Kentucky’s First Steps and Pennsylvania’s Alliance for Infants and Toddlers.
Dr. Gallen’s research centers on translating infant mental health theory into practice through reflective supervision frameworks and workforce development initiatives. His work emphasizes relationship-based interventions as the cornerstone of effective early childhood systems, influencing policy and practice at state and national levels. As a ZERO TO THREE Fellow, he bridges research, policy, and direct service to improve outcomes for vulnerable infants and families.
His publication record (2012-2018) demonstrates consistent focus on validating reflective supervision tools, enhancing infant-caregiver interactions, and developing global engagement models in mental health education. Key contributions include establishing measurement standards for supervision quality and promoting authentic assessment practices in early intervention systems.
