Robert Francis is a Professor of Urban Ecology & Society and Vice Dean (Education & Students) at King’s College London’s Department of Geography, within the Faculty of Social Science and Public Policy. He holds a BSc (Hons) in Landscape Ecology from De Montfort University (2000) and a PhD in Geography from the University of Birmingham (2004). His research focuses on urban ecosystems, biogeomorphology, invasive species, and the environmental impacts of warfare. He has authored over 85 peer-reviewed publications and edited major handbooks like The Routledge Handbook of Landscape Ecology and Routledge Handbook of Biosecurity and Invasive Species.
Key affiliations include King’s Water Centre and the Physical & Environmental Geography research group. His work bridges ecology and societal challenges, emphasizing urban biodiversity, reconciliation ecology, and sustainable water management. Notable projects include studies on urban peregrine falcons, China’s river metabolism, and post-COVID-19 health recovery dynamics.
Research interests span ecohydrology, warfare ecology, and invasive species management. He advocates for experiential learning in geography, using low-cost sensors for environmental education. Current initiatives focus on coastal defense structures and dryland resilience in conflict zones.
