Nicholas Gill

Professor Nicholas Gill is a human geographer specializing in environmental management, rural cultures, and natural resource governance. He currently holds the position of Honorary Professorial Fellow at the University of Wollongong's School of Geography and Sustainable Communities and previously served as Head of School (2020–2023). His work bridges conventional natural resource management with cultural studies of landscapes, focusing on land use conflicts, biosecurity, and Indigenous stewardship.

Education: PhD in Geography (University of New South Wales, 2000) and BA (Hons) in Geography (Flinders University, 1993). He has supervised over 15 PhD/Master’s research projects, including studies on invasive species management, climate-smart agriculture, and urban greening in Dhaka’s slums.

Research Interests: Gill’s work explores rural land management dynamics, invasive species governance, and the cultural dimensions of environmental conflict. Notable projects include collaborations with NSW National Parks on biosecurity hygiene stations in Kosciuszko National Park and investigations into Indigenous cultural burning practices for bushfire resilience.

Grants & Leadership: He leads the NSW Bushfire and Natural Hazards Research Centre’s Communities Node and has secured funding from Australian Research Council (ARC), NSW Government, and industry partners. Recent grants focus on collective action for invasive species, regenerative agriculture, and post-fire landscape management.

Teaching: Developed innovative virtual fieldtrips for courses like GEOG337, integrating Google Earth tools to explore heritage sites and urban landscapes.
