Robert Flowers is the Herbert J. and Ann L. Siegel Dean and Professor in the Department of Chemistry at Lehigh University. He earned his Ph.D. in Chemistry from Lehigh (1991) and B.S. from East Stroudsburg University (1986). His research spans mechanistic studies of electron transfer reactions, rare earth chemistry, organometallic mechanisms, and analytical applications of backscattering interferometry.
Education:
- Ph.D. in Chemistry, Lehigh University, 1991
- B.S. in Chemistry, East Stroudsburg University, 1986
Research interests focus on:
- Proton-coupled electron transfer mechanisms
- Samarium and titanium catalysis
- Backscattering interferometry for molecular recognition
- Kinetic analysis of organometallic reactions
- Development of sustainable catalytic systems
His recent publications (2015-2018) predominantly explore samarium diiodide chemistry, titanocene catalysis, and analytical techniques. Key themes include solvent/additive effects in reductions, proton-coupled electron transfer, and catalytic applications in organic synthesis, with strong emphasis on mechanistic elucidation.
Awards and honors:
- Danser Distinguished Faculty Chair in Chemistry (2008)
He advises graduate and undergraduate researchers, with current projects including low-valent samarium chemistry and titanium-mediated catalysis. The Flowers Research Group utilizes advanced instrumentation including backscattering interferometers, argon gloveboxes, and stopped-flow spectrophotometers.
