Robert Devigne is a Professor of Political Science at Tufts University's School of Arts and Sciences, specializing in political philosophy, ancient/modern philosophy, and the intersection of philosophy, politics, and religion. He has taught at Tufts since 1991, rising from Assistant Professor to Chair of the Department of Political Science (2006-2012).
- Education: PhD in Political Science from Columbia University (1990), with graduate/postgraduate studies at Yale, Oxford, and Stanford.
Research Interests focus on the dialectical relationship between ancient and modern political thought, particularly through the works of Plato, Nietzsche, and John Stuart Mill. His scholarship bridges liberal, romantic, and religious moral frameworks to re-examine foundational political ideologies.
Publications include two influential books—Reforming Liberalism (2006) and Recasting Conservatism (1994, 1997)—alongside articles analyzing Mill's theory of justice, Nietzsche's political thought, Oakeshott's conservatism, and Strauss's philosophical legacy. His work appears in journals like American Political Science Review and History of Political Thought.
