J. Michael Hoffpauir serves as Assistant Professor of Political Theory within the Intellectual Foundations center at the University of Austin, where he contributes to the core curriculum. Previously, he held teaching positions at Arizona State University's School of Civic and Economic Thought and Leadership, Hillsdale College, Clemson University's Lyceum Program (where he also served as Associate Director), and programs at the Hudson Institute and American Enterprise Institute.
Hoffpauir earned his academic credentials from:
- B.A. in Political Science, Louisiana State University
- M.A. in Political Science, Boston College
- Ph.D. in Political Science, Claremont Graduate University
His research spans ancient and modern political philosophy with emphasis on statesmanship and American founding principles. He critically examines classical texts by Plato and Seneca to address enduring questions of political obligation and reason while engaging modern thinkers like Leo Strauss to bridge historical and contemporary political discourse.
Hoffpauir's publications consistently connect classical political thought to present-day challenges. His book Between Socrates and the Many analyzes Plato's Crito, while essays explore Seneca's Stoicism, Strauss's Nietzsche interpretations, and foundations of liberal education. This body of work demonstrates how classical philosophical insights inform modern political challenges, particularly within American political thought.
