Robert Bristow is a University Professor of Cancer Studies at The University of Manchester, leading the Division of Cancer Sciences and directing the Manchester Cancer Research Centre (MCRC) and the CRUK Major Centre. He also serves as Chief Academic Officer at The Christie NHS Foundation Trust and Senior Group Leader at the Cancer Research UK Manchester Institute. His work bridges clinician-scientist roles, with prior positions at the University of Toronto and Princess Margaret Cancer Centre.
Dr. Bristow holds advanced qualifications: MD (1992, Toronto), PhD in Medical Biophysics (1997, Toronto), and honorific titles like FRCPC and FMedSci. His research focuses on tumor hypoxia, DNA damage signaling, and prostate cancer genomics. Key interests include developing clinical trials for aggressive prostate cancers and understanding genomic drivers of cancer progression.
Major achievements include over 300 publications, editorship of the Basic Science of Oncology, and awards such as the Canadian Cancer Society Research Scientist title (2004), ESTRO Honorary Fellowship (2011), and Academy of Medical Sciences Fellowship (2019). He leads projects like the MAESTRO Programme (CRUK RadNet) and the Turing AI Fellowship initiative.
His research spans prostate cancer subtypes, hypoxia’s role in genomic instability, and translational studies in radiation therapy. Collaborations include multi-institutional projects on cancer evolution and AI-driven experimental design.
