Robert Bernasconi, the Edwin Erle Sparks Professor of Philosophy and African American Studies at Penn State University, specializes in critical philosophy of race, European philosophy (19th–20th century), and critiques of the philosophical canon. His work addresses race, racism, and the marginalization of non-Western philosophies in canonical Western thought.
His research focuses include:
- Critical Race Theory
- African American History and Culture
- Philosophical Analysis of Race Mixing, Nature, and Culture
- Postcolonial Critique of Philosophical Canons
- Racism in Works of Western Philosophers (Kant, Hegel, Heidegger, etc.)
He has edited or co-edited over thirty books on race and serves as the founding and current editor of the journal Critical Philosophy of Race. His career spans teaching roles at the University of Memphis and the University of Essex in England.
