Michael Monahan is a Professor of Philosophy and Chair at the University of Memphis. He holds a Ph.D. from the University of Illinois and previously taught at Marquette University (2003-2017). His research focuses on oppression and liberation through Africana and phenomenological frameworks, emphasizing race and racism. He is a founding member of the Phenomenology Roundtable and serves as Treasurer for the Caribbean Philosophical Association. Monahan’s work critiques theories of recognition in racial contexts and explores creolization as a liberatory practice. He has authored influential books such as The Creolizing Subject and Creolizing Hegel, and his articles appear in journals like South African Journal of Philosophy and CLR James Journal. He actively engages with global philosophical communities through conferences and presentations in South Africa, South America, and across the U.S.
His teaching spans Africana Philosophy, Philosophy of Race, Political Philosophy, and Nietzsche. Monahan also practices and teaches martial arts, integrating Nietzschean thought into his scholarship. Recent research includes investigations into Southern U.S. racial dynamics, disability studies, and decolonial epistemologies. His work bridges continental philosophy with social justice movements, offering innovative critiques of racial capitalism and white nationalism.
