Robert Becker is an Associate Professor Emeritus of Music at Chapman University's Hall-Musco Conservatory of Music within the College of Performing Arts. He previously served as Director of String Studies (2006–2019) and Principal Viola of the Pacific Symphony Orchestra (1982–2016). His expertise spans viola performance, chamber music, and string pedagogy.
Education: B.M. and M.M. from The Juilliard School. He has held leadership roles with the American String Teachers Association (ASTA), including President of the greater Los Angeles chapter (2016–2019) and recent selection as President Elect at the state level.
Research interests include string technique, pain-free playing methodologies, and chamber music ensemble coordination. His performances include solo and orchestral roles with renowned artists like Yo-Yo Ma and recordings with composers such as Philip Glass. He has presented workshops globally, including at Carnegie Hall and international festivals in Cremona, Italy.
Awards: Naumberg Chamber Music Award, Vera Barstow Award, and Chapman’s Excellence in Teaching Award. His students pursue careers in prestigious conservatories and orchestras.
Labs/Teams: Co-founder of the American String Quartet and director of TheViola Workout summer workshop. Active in musician advocacy on Pacific Symphony’s Board of Directors and Investment Committee.
