Robert B. Jackson holds the Nicholas Chair of Global Environmental Change at Duke University's Nicholas School of the Environment and is a Professor in the Biology Department. He directs Duke's Center on Global Change and Stable Isotope Mass Spectrometry Laboratory, and leads the Department of Energy-funded National Institute for Climate Change Research for the southeastern U.S.
His research spans global carbon and water cycles, biosphere-atmosphere interactions, energy systems, and climate change policy. Jackson integrates field measurements with modeling to address anthropogenic impacts on Earth systems, with recent work focusing on methane emissions, wetland degradation, and drought-induced ecological shifts.
Research trends across his 150+ publications emphasize anthropogenic climate drivers and mitigation solutions, combining biogeochemical analysis with policy engagement. His work regularly bridges scientific findings to practical climate strategies through industry partnerships.
Award highlights include:
- Murray F. Buell Award (Ecological Society of America)
- Presidential Early Career Award (1999, NSF)
- AGU Fellow
- ISI Highly Cited Researcher (top 0.5%)
Jackson advises through the Janus Fellowship for undergraduate environmental research and secures major grants from NSF, NASA, and Environmental Defense Fund. His laboratory infrastructure includes Duke's Stable Isotope Mass Spectrometry Facility and the Center on Global Change, supporting interdisciplinary climate research across scales.
