Robert Adam is an Associate Professor in the Department of Languages and Intercultural Studies at Heriot-Watt University's School of Social Sciences. His research focuses on sign language contact, minority sign languages, and the roles of deaf interpreters and translators. He leads projects such as Cross-signing in Japan and the UK (2022-2024) and studies Deaf BSL users’ media preferences. Adam holds two major awards: the 2021 Fellowship from the UK Association of Sign Language Interpreters and the 2019 World Federation of the Deaf Merit Award for International Solidarity.
His work contributes to UN Sustainable Development Goals related to inclusive education and reduced inequalities. Adam has authored over 40 publications, including co-editing the 2025 volume International Perspectives on Sign Language Translator & Interpreter Education. He actively participates in global conferences and workshops, addressing topics like interpreter education and sign language policy.
Adam supervises PhD students and advocates for professional representation of sign language translators/interpreters through initiatives like the 2021 UK Census report. His research also explores deaf community mental health and the impact of early communication access on well-being.
