Prof. Jemina Napier is Chair of Intercultural Communication and Associate Principal for Research Culture & People at Heriot-Watt University (HWU). She holds dual professorial appointments in the School of Social Sciences and its Languages & Intercultural Studies department. Her roles include Director of the Centre for Translation & Interpreting Studies in Scotland (CTISS) and leadership in multiple research initiatives including the UKRI-funded EDI Caucus. She has held senior administrative posts such as Interim Executive Dean of Social Sciences and Director of Research.
Education: MA in BSL/English Interpreting (Durham University, 1998), PhD in Linguistics (Macquarie University, 2001). She established Australia’s first Auslan interpreting program and now serves as Adjunct Professor there. Additional roles include Visiting Professor at Trinity College Dublin and Fellowships with the Academy of Social Sciences (UK), Australian Academy of the Humanities, and Chartered Institute of Linguists.
Research focuses on sign language interpreting, linguistic access, equality/diversity in academia, and family language policy. Key projects include the JUSTISIGNS series on legal interpreting, the EDI Caucus for inclusive research practices, and the DESIGNS employment equity project. Her work addresses deaf communities’ needs in policing, healthcare, education, and workplace settings.
Publications (217+ outputs) span books, chapters, and journals including the International Journal of Interpreter Education (founded 2009). She leads projects totaling £5M+ funding and has advised global organizations like the World Federation of the Deaf. Awards include the Australian Journal of Human Rights Andrea Durbach Award and multiple fellowships.
