Robert A. Thomas

Robert A. Thomas serves as Professor of Environmental Communication and Director of the Center for Environmental Communication at Loyola University New Orleans, holding the Loyola Distinguished Scholar Chair. He previously served as interim director of the School of Mass Communication and maintains adjunct appointments in Biological Sciences and the Environment Program.

His educational background includes a doctorate in evolutionary biology from Texas A&M University and post-doctoral training in biochemistry at L.S.U. Medical Center, with adjunct professorships at University of New Orleans, Tulane University, and Louisiana State University.

Dr. Thomas's research spans Environmental Communication, Environmental Policy, and Tropical Ecology, with specialized expertise in herpetology and urban environmental systems. His work integrates stakeholder communication, consensus building, and environmental intervention strategies, particularly focused on Mississippi River Delta ecosystems and urban sustainability challenges.

His distinguished honors include:

The Center for Environmental Communication operates through his endowed chair funded by Freeport-McMoRan and the Louisiana Board of Regents. Dr. Thomas has taught foundational courses including Environmental Communication, Tropical Ecology, and Herpetology while directing the annual Institute for Environmental Communication since 1999.

He maintains significant professional leadership as past president of the Association of Nature Center Administrators and service on the American Association of Museums Accreditation Commission, alongside advisory roles for the Strategic Petroleum Reserve.
