Professor Robert A. Harris is a distinguished academic at Karolinska Institutet, serving as Team Leader of the Immunotherapy Research Group within the Department of Clinical Neuroscience. Since January 1, 2019, he has held the position of Academic Vice-President for Doctoral Education at Karolinska Institutet, demonstrating leadership in both research and academic administration.
His research focuses on autoimmune diseases including multiple sclerosis, type 1 diabetes, and rheumatic arthritis, with a particular emphasis on developing novel immunotherapies. Through a strongly interconnected research program, Professor Harris aims to translate basic research findings into clinical applications. His work addresses fundamental questions about immune mechanisms underlying autoimmune diseases and seeks to define the biochemical and immunological basis for autoantigenicity of self-proteins.
Professor Harris's publications span both biomedical research and academic leadership, with recent work examining doctoral education trends, supervisor development, and translational medicine. His research group has published in high-impact journals including Nature Communications, Nature Immunology, and Glia, demonstrating significant contributions to neuroscience and immunology.
