Robbert J Creton is a Professor of Medical Science (Research) and Pathology and Laboratory Medicine (Research) at Brown University, where he studies brain development and behavior using zebrafish as a model system. He directs the Leduc Bioimaging Facility and the Molecular Pathology Core, focusing on calcium signaling, environmental toxicology, and neurodegenerative diseases like Alzheimer’s.
- Education: B.S. in Biology (1990) and Ph.D. in Developmental Biology (1994) from Utrecht University
His research spans three main NIH-funded projects: automated behavioral analysis for visual impairment, calcineurin signaling in Alzheimer’s/Down syndrome, and high-throughput tools for studying neural systems. Collaborations with Drs. Ruth Colwill, Jason Sello, and others examine PCB toxicity, chemotherapy-induced neuropathy, and calcineurin-based therapies.
His 15 most recent articles (2025–2017) focus on zebrafish models for Alzheimer’s disease, calcineurin signaling, visual impairment, environmental toxicants, and behavioral analysis technologies. These studies often employ high-throughput imaging systems and drug repurposing strategies.
Scientific Awards:
- Spiegel Fellow (1993)
- NATO Fellow (1995)
As a principal investigator, Creton has secured grants from NIH (R01 EY024562, R01 HD060647, S10 OD023461) and the Rhode Island Foundation. He mentors graduate students and collaborators, with lab alumni including Rahma Ibrahim and Cameron Brown.
The Leduc Bioimaging Facility under his direction provides advanced imaging tools for life sciences research at Brown, enabling studies on neural development and regeneration. His work aims to bridge zebrafish findings with mammalian models and clinical trials.
