Rob Spalton is a Teaching Professor at the University of Portsmouth's Faculty of Business & Law, affiliated with the School of Strategy, Marketing and Innovation and the Centre of Excellence in Defence, Risk & Resilience. He is part of the PBS@Cranwell team, delivering the Conceptual and Intellectual Development Programme at the Royal Air Force College. A second-career academic since 2015, he transitioned from a 16-year military career as an Army Officer, including roles in the Light Infantry and The Rifles, with six operational tours in Sierra Leone, Iraq, and Afghanistan. He currently serves as a staff officer in the Army Reserve with the Desert Rats.
His teaching spans Level 4 to Level 7 courses, covering topics from historical strategic thought to contemporary air power employment. He holds additional responsibilities as Academic Course Manager for the Basic Air Warfare Course and Trenchard Flight, and as assistant departmental co-ordinator for assessment and moderation.

Research interests focus on contemporary security challenges and strategic thought, leveraging his extensive military experience. He organized an MOD-wide conference on Contemporary Security Challenges and integrates practitioner perspectives into teaching. His work bridges military practice with academic analysis, emphasizing cross-government coordination and modern defense strategies.
External roles include service as an Army Reserve Officer since 2015 and prior full-time military service until 2015. His career includes high-level staff posts at Permanent Joint Headquarters, the Air Warfare School, and a Whitehall steering group.
