Ogden specializes in applying genomic technologies to conservation challenges, spanning captive breeding, reintroduction genetics, and wildlife forensics. His work bridges veterinary medicine, agriculture, and non-model wildlife species, utilizing techniques like RAD-seq and de novo genome assembly.
Recent research focuses on DNA traceability for combating illegal wildlife trade, fisheries forensics, and population genomics of endangered species such as dama gazelles, golden eagles, and red squirrels. Articles highlight cross-species SNP validation, non-invasive sampling, and functional genomic tool development.
Ogden co-founded TRACE Wildlife Forensics Network and directs ECOS (Edinburgh Conservation Science), a cross-institutional conservation policy forum. He is a Director of the Society for Wildlife Forensic Science and serves on the IUCN SSC Conservation Genetics Specialist Group.
