Professor Rob Klassen is Professor and Chair of the Psychology in Education Research Centre at the University of York's Department of Education. He joined the University of York in 2012 after previously serving as Assistant, Associate, and Full Professor in Educational Psychology at the University of Alberta from 2004 to 2012. He also maintains an Adjunct Full Professor position at the University of Alberta since 2012.
Professor Klassen earned his B.Ed. and M.A. in Educational Psychology from the University of British Columbia, followed by a PhD in Educational Psychology from Simon Fraser University in 2003. Prior to his academic career, he worked as a teacher (1988-1992) and school psychologist (1992-2004) in Canada, with additional experience in England and Australia.
His research focuses on the psychology of teacher selection, motivation and emotions in education, and cross-cultural educational psychology. An ongoing program of research explores how motivation beliefs influence teacher effectiveness, with much of his current work applying theories and methods from educational and organisational psychology to strengthen the teacher workforce through the Teacher Selection Project. His recent publications demonstrate a strong emphasis on evidence-based practices in teacher selection, STEM teacher recruitment, and innovative teacher development interventions.

Professor Klassen serves as Associate Editor for the British Journal of Educational Psychology and sits on the editorial boards of the Journal of Educational Psychology and Journal of Experimental Education. He regularly serves on national grant review panels in Finland, Hong Kong, Ireland, Luxembourg, and the UK, and is accepting PhD students interested in predicting teaching effectiveness, teacher selection, adolescent motivation, and behavioral indicators of student and teacher engagement. His research has been funded by prestigious organizations including the ERC, SSHRC, ESRC IAA fund, World Bank, and GIZ, with international collaborations spanning Australia, Germany, Hong Kong, Kenya, Morocco, and the UK.
