Rob Klassen is Professor and Chair of the Psychology in Education Research Centre at the University of York, UK, a position he has held since 2012. Prior to this, he was a Professor in the Department of Educational Psychology at the University of Alberta in Canada (2004-2012). His academic career is built on extensive practical experience as a teacher (1988-1992) and school psychologist (1992-2004) in Vancouver, Canada, with additional experience in England and Australia.
Professor Klassen's educational background includes:
- B.Ed. and M.A. in Educational Psychology from the University of British Columbia
- PhD in Educational Psychology from Simon Fraser University (2003)
Professor Klassen's research focuses on the psychology of teacher selection, motivation and emotions in education, and cross-cultural educational psychology. His work applies theories and methods from educational and organizational psychology to strengthen the teacher workforce. The Teacher Selection Project team conducts research and consultancy to address challenges in teacher and educational leader recruitment, selection, and development.
Professor Klassen's recent publications demonstrate a consistent focus on teacher effectiveness, selection methods, and development. His work spans cross-cultural studies examining teacher stress, self-efficacy, and occupational commitment across multiple countries. A significant portion of his research involves developing and testing innovative methods for teacher recruitment and selection, including situational judgment tests and realistic job previews.

Professor Klassen is actively involved in research supervision, accepting PhD students interested in teacher selection, teaching effectiveness, and adolescent motivation. His research has been funded by prestigious organizations including the ERC (Consolidator and Proof of Concept grants), SSHRC (Insight and Standard grants), ESRC IAA fund, World Bank, and GIZ (German Development Agency). He maintains extensive international collaborations across Australia, Germany, Hong Kong, Kenya, Morocco, and the UK.
Professor Klassen leads the Teacher Selection Project team at the University of York, which focuses on developing evidence-based methods for teacher recruitment and selection. He also serves as Associate Editor for the British Journal of Educational Psychology and on the editorial boards of the Journal of Educational Psychology and Journal of Experimental Education. His research group maintains active collaborations with institutions across Asia, Australia, Europe, and the Americas.
