Rob Janssen

Rob Janssen is a part-time Full Professor of Knee Reconstruction in the Orthopedic Biomechanics group within the Department of Biomedical Engineering at Eindhoven University of Technology (TU/e). Appointed to this position in 2025, he combines his academic role with clinical practice as an orthopedic knee surgeon at Máxima Orthopedic Center. Janssen chairs the tertiary referral STZ Center of Expertise for Complex Knee Injuries and the European ESSKA PAMI Research Center for Pediatric ACL Injuries. He also serves as knee consultant for the Royal Dutch Football Association (KNVB) and TeamNL.

His research focuses on translational approaches to knee reconstruction, particularly in developing biomechanical, biological and imaging models for personalized medicine in adult and pediatric anterior cruciate ligament reconstructions. Janssen's work spans complex knee injuries, sports medicine, traumatic ligament injuries, cartilage regeneration, and osteoarthritis. He has co-authored various (inter)national knee guidelines for doctors and physiotherapists.

Janssen's 251+ publications demonstrate consistent research output with increasing productivity in recent years, particularly in pediatric ACL reconstruction, knee biomechanics, and tissue engineering approaches. His work shows a strong trend toward translational research with clinical applications, particularly in personalized medicine approaches for knee reconstruction.

Prof. Janssen serves on numerous PhD thesis committees and has been actively involved in orthopedic education, including as Course Director for Arthroscopy & Arthroplasty Courses at University Medical Center Utrecht. His external positions include Professor of Value-Based Health Care at Fontys University of Applied Sciences and Director of the Orthopedic Surgery Residency Program at Catharina Hospital, Eindhoven. His research contributes to UN Sustainable Development Goals related to health and well-being.
