Risto Alapuro (1940–2022) was a renowned sociologist and historian, holding the position of Professor of Sociology at the University of Helsinki from 1991 until his passing. He previously served as Academy Professor at the Academy of Finland (2005–2009) and Professor at the University of Jyväskylä (1987–1991). His academic career included visiting roles at institutions such as the University of Michigan, University of Paris, and the Institute of Sociology in Moscow. He specialized in historical and comparative political sociology, civil society, and social movements, with a focus on Finnish and Russian contexts.
Alapuro earned a Master of Social Sciences (1967), Licentiate (1969), and PhD (1973) from the University of Helsinki, all with high honors. His research explored the interplay between social structures and political processes, particularly in the context of Finland’s nation-building, civil war, and peripheral geopolitical position between East and West.
His grants included projects like "Self-Governing Associations in Northwestern Russia" (2004–2007) and "Spaces of Democracy" (2005–2010). He contributed to journals such as Acta Sociologica and Genèses, and served on editorial boards and academic councils. He supervised eleven doctoral theses and played a key role in evaluating academic appointments across Nordic and Baltic institutions.
Alapuro’s work emphasized civil society’s role in democratization and explored contentious politics through social networks. His legacy includes seminal works like State and Revolution in Finland (1988) and analyses of post-Soviet transitions in Russia and Estonia. His memberships included the Finnish Academy of Sciences (1993) and Academia Europaea (1998).
