Risto Saarinen is a Professor of Ecumenics at the University of Helsinki's Faculty of Theology. He holds additional roles such as Director of the Academy of Finland's Centre of Excellence 'Reason and Religious Recognition' (2014–2019) and has served as Visiting Professor at KU Leuven (2011–2014). His academic career includes positions as Research Professor at the Institute for Ecumenical Research (Strasbourg, 1994–1999) and Acting Professor of Social Ethics at the University of Helsinki. He is a member of the Finnish Academy of Arts and Letters and has chaired numerous international committees, including the 2012 World Congress of Luther Research and the 2016 Societas Oecumenica Plenary.
Education: Dr. theol. (Theology, University of Helsinki, 1988), Dr. phil. (Philosophy, University of Helsinki, 1994), and diplomatic training from the Finnish Foreign Ministry (KAVAKU, 1986).
Research focuses on systematic theology, ecumenics, and the history of philosophy, with special emphasis on Reformation studies, philosophical psychology, and the theology of recognition. His work bridges medieval, Renaissance, and early modern thought, addressing topics like weakness of will, ecumenical tolerance, and interreligious dialogue.
Key achievements include leading major grants such as the 'Philosophical Psychology, Morality and Politics' Centre of Excellence (2008–2013) and the 'Ecumenical Recognition and Toleration of Otherness' project (2012–2016). He contributes to editorial boards of journals like Neue Zeitschrift für Systematische Theologie und Religionsphilosophie and holds roles in organizations like the Lutheran World Federation and the Crisis Management Initiative.
