Rina Plattner is a Professor at the University of Kentucky College of Medicine, affiliated with the Markey Cancer Center. She serves as Co-Lead for the Molecular and Cellular Oncology Program and holds the Carmen L. Buck Professorship/Chair in Oncology Research Endowment Fund.
- Doctor of Philosophy, Indiana University (1992)
- Bachelor of Arts, Colorado College (1985)
Her research focuses on Abl non-receptor tyrosine kinases, mechanisms of cancer invasion, and therapeutic resistance in melanoma and breast cancer. She investigates signaling pathways like MEK/ERK/MYC and ABL1/2 as targets for cancer treatment, with recent work addressing NRAS-mutant melanoma resistance via RAF homodimerization.
Key research trends from her publications (2019–2023) include: (1) ABL1/2 and DDR1 kinase targeting in melanoma therapy, (2) tyrosine kinase inhibitor mechanisms affecting DNA repair proteins (MLH1), (3) exploration of Keap1/Nrf2 pathways in lung cancer, and (4) identification of protein markers for breast cancer recurrence.
- Bank of America Postdoctoral Fellowship (1993)
- National Research Service Award Training Grant (2001)
- Markey Cancer Center Women Strong Career Award (2017)
- Circle of Power Leadership Program (2007)
- Armstrong Fellowship in Cancer (1997)
She leads projects funded by the V Foundation and National Cancer Institute, including:
- Targeting ABL1/2 and DDR1 for NRAS-Mutant Melanoma (2025–2029)
- Combating Melanoma Resistance via ABL1/2 Inhibition (2022–2027)
- Maintains long-term involvement in National Cancer Institute grants supporting Markey Cancer Center infrastructure since 2013.
