Riitta Suhonen is a Full Professor in Nursing Science with a specialization in Gerontological Nursing Science since 2011 at the University of Turku. She serves as the Director of the Doctoral Programme in Nursing Science (DPNurs) and Vice Head of the Department of Nursing Science. Additionally, she holds a part-time position as Director of Nursing at Turku University Hospital, Welfare Division, since 2016.
- Research focuses on gerontological nursing, individualized care, ethics, and self-management of older adults
- Co-leader of the 'Ethics in healthcare practice and education' research program
- Principal investigator of the international Individualized Care Project (2002-present), developing the Individualised Care Scale
Scientific Awards:
- 2020: Order of The White Rose in Finland, Knight First Class
- 2009: Fellow of the European Academy of Nursing Science (EANS)
With 250+ peer-reviewed publications (h-index 34 in Scopus), she has led cross-cultural studies like the COST Action RANCARE CA15208 (2016-2020) and collaborated on projects including ERASMUS+ Nurse-Lead. She has supervised 11 PhDs and currently mentors 20 PhD candidates, alongside 2 postdoctoral mentees.
