Professor Riitta Lahesmaa is a systems immunology expert at the University of Turku's Faculty of Medicine, where she serves as director of the Turku Bioscience Centre since 1998. Her research focuses on T cell development and function, particularly their roles in pathogen defense, cancer immunity, and type 1 diabetes progression in children, with significant discoveries in immune regulatory factors.
- Doctorate from University of Turku (1987)
- Postdoctoral research at Stanford University (1987-1990)
- Principal Investigator at Roche Palo Alto (1990-1998)
Her work bridges molecular immunology with translational research, contributing to the InFLAMES flagship program. She has supervised 30 doctoral theses and authored over 250 publications while holding multiple patents.
- EMBO Membership (2025)
- Academy Professor, Finnish Academy (2016-2021)
- Member, Finnish Academy of Science (since 2012)
Lahesmaa actively participates in international collaborations through visiting professorships at Harvard, Stanford, and UCSF. Her lab investigates human immune responses through cutting-edge proteomics and systems biology approaches.
