Rico Gutschmidt is an Assistant Professor at the University of Konstanz and a Visiting Lecturer at ETH Zurich. He holds the Philosopher in Residence fellowship at the TUM Institute for Advanced Study (TUM-IAS) from 2023 to 2024. His research focuses on transformative philosophy, skepticism, and the existential dimensions of human experience, particularly in healthcare and spiritual care contexts. He earned his Ph.D. from the University of Bonn (2009) and habilitation from TU Dresden (2015). His work critiques foundationalist approaches in physics, religion, and knowledge, advocating for philosophy as a practice that challenges assumptions and reshapes self-understanding.
Key research areas include ancient and modern skepticism, Wittgensteinian language analysis, and the intersection of negative theology with existential philosophy. Gutschmidt’s current focus group at TUM-IAS explores boundary situations in healthcare and spiritual care, linking philosophical inquiry to psychological and medical practices. He has received grants from the Fritz Thyssen Foundation, Volkswagen Foundation, and German Research Foundation, and held fellowships at institutions like the Maimonides Centre and Alfried Krupp Wissenschaftskolleg.
His publications span philosophy journals and monographs, including works on Heidegger’s late thought, transformative experiences in skepticism, and the religious dimensions of philosophical inquiry. He actively engages with interdisciplinary topics, such as the ethical implications of healthcare and the application of philosophical methods to contemporary societal challenges.
