Rick L. Weathermon is a Senior Research Scientist in the Department of Anthropology at the University of Wyoming, College of Arts and Sciences. He holds a B.A. (1990), M.A. (1996), and Ph.D. (2011), all in Anthropology from the University of Wyoming. His work spans archaeology and physical anthropology, with a strong focus on NAGPRA compliance, laboratory instruction, and collections management.

Rick's research interests include bioarchaeology, bison ethology, experimental archaeology, prehistoric perishable technologies, lithic source analysis, and the historical and prehistoric use of the Black Hills. His work integrates forensic osteology, osteological taphonomy, and microscopy applications in anthropology. He has conducted extensive research on frontier-era burials and lithic technologies in Wyoming and the Northwestern Plains.
His recent publications focus on bioarchaeological analyses of pioneer-era and Indian Wars burials, as well as non-traditional lithic technologies. The body of work demonstrates a consistent engagement with historical archaeology, human osteology, and regional prehistory, particularly in Wyoming and the Great Plains. His research often combines historical records with skeletal analysis and experimental methods.
He serves as the NAGPRA Contact for the university, reflecting his role in ethical stewardship of human remains and cultural items. He teaches courses such as Introduction to Archaeology, Human Osteology, Archaeological Field School, and Osteological Practicum, contributing significantly to student training.
