Dr. Carolyn Freiwald is an Associate Professor of Anthropology at the University of Mississippi, affiliated with the Department of Sociology and Anthropology within the College of Liberal Arts. She leads the Carolyn Freiwald Bioarchaeological Lab and specializes in bioarchaeology, focusing on ancient migration and diet in Mesoamerica using isotope geochemistry and osteology. Her research explores population movements, burial practices, and identity among the ancient Maya and neighboring populations.
Education: B.A. History (University of Wisconsin-Madison, 1989); M.S. and Ph.D. in Anthropology (University of Wisconsin-Madison, 2004 and 2011).

- Isotope mapping to trace migration networks in Belize, Guatemala, and Mexico
- Dental modification practices and their links to migration
- Burial treatment analysis in ancestor shrines and caves
- Zooarchaeology and bone tool production
Awards: Recognized for teaching excellence, historical preservation, and contributions to bioarchaeological research, including the Mike L. Edmonds New Scholar Award (2019) and multiple Excellence in History Awards (2014–2024).
Advising & Labs: Mentors students in osteology, zooarchaeology, and archaeological chemistry. Current projects include migration studies in Belize, bone tool analysis in Guatemala, and dietary investigations in Mexico. Collaborates with forensic chemistry programs to integrate isotopic data into archaeological studies.
