J. Marla Toyne is a Professor in the Department of Anthropology at the University of Central Florida's College of Sciences. A biological anthropologist specializing in bioarchaeology, human skeletal biology, paleopathology, and stable isotope science, her research focuses on Andean South America, particularly ancient skeletal remains from Peru's Túcume and Kuelap sites. Her work examines violence/warfare, ritual activities, ethnic identity, mortuary complexity, and social interactions through interdisciplinary approaches.
- University of Western Ontario: BA, MA
- Tulane University: PhD
Research spans osteological analysis of mortuary contexts, Andean paleopathology, biogeochemical dietary/mobility reconstructions, and vertical landscape mortuary studies. Projects include the Túcume Bioarchaeological Project, Chachapoya Mortuary Patterns, and Croatia Avar Period collaborations. Her isotopic research extends from Peru to Guatemala and Croatia, emphasizing innovative sample preservation and baseline establishment.
Recent publications highlight advancements in Andean isotopic studies, trepanation analysis in Croatia, and bioarchaeological methodologies. She has received funding from NSF, National Geographic Society, and SSHRC-Canada. Dr. Toyne mentors students through fieldwork in Peru, osteological lab projects, and the UCF Laboratory for Bioarchaeological Sciences, emphasizing statistical, chemical, and GIS skills.

She actively engages students in analyzing commingled burials, ritual violence, paleopathology, and stable isotope studies, with students contributing to projects like mobility in Medieval Northern Ireland and zooarchaeological isotopic analysis. Fieldwork opportunities in Peru and Croatia are available through her programs.
