Rick Harwell is an Associate Professor of Practice at Texas A&M University's College of Agriculture & Life Sciences. He holds a B.S. in Education (Parks & Recreation) from Memphis State University (1979), an M.S. in Education (Parks & Recreation) from the same institution (1980), a Certificate in Nonprofit Management from Duke University (1996), and an ABD in Recreation & Leisure Sciences from the University of Utah (1985-1988). His expertise spans HMGT administration, leadership in outdoor pursuits, and human resources management.
Professionally, Harwell has over 40 years of experience in HMGT/RPTS, including roles as a Tennessee State Park Ranger, Parks & Recreation Director in Alaska, and Assistant City Manager. He has taught at institutions like the University of Memphis, University of Utah, and Clemson University, and served the U.S. Army and Navy MWR programs. Notably, he has visited all 63 U.S. National Parks and all seven continents.
His awards include recognition from the Boy Scouts of America, Memphis State University, the University of Utah, and the American Humanics. His career emphasizes leadership in outdoor recreation and risk management within nonprofit and government sectors.
