Professor Rick Delbridge is Professor of Organizational Analysis at Cardiff Business School and co-convenor of the Centre for Innovation Policy (CIPR). He currently serves as the university lead for the Cardiff Capital Region Challenge Fund in partnership with Y Lab and the Cardiff Capital Region. Previously, from 2012 to 2019, he was Dean of Research, Innovation and Enterprise at Cardiff University and led the development of the Social Science Research Park (SPARK), which he co-authored about in the Nesta paper "Social Science Parks - society's new super-labs".
Delbridge's research focuses on the management and organization of innovation, employment relations, and Japanese management practices. His work demonstrates a consistent interest in how organizations function within broader social and economic contexts, particularly examining innovation processes in peripheral regions, organizational sustainability, and the transfer of management practices across cultural boundaries. His research often bridges theoretical organizational studies with practical policy implications, especially regarding innovation policy and regional economic development.
His recent publications show a clear evolution toward mission-oriented innovation, particularly examining how universities can contribute to regional development through micro-missions and challenge-led innovation. The publications reveal strong interdisciplinary connections between organizational theory, innovation studies, and regional economic development, with increasing attention to sustainability, inclusivity, and the foundational economy in less developed regions.
His notable scientific awards and honors include the Academy of Management Review Best Paper Award (2005), the Organization Studies Roland Calori Prize for Best Paper (2017-2018), and the British Academy of Management Medal for Leadership (2020). He is an Academician of the Academy of Social Sciences (2009-), Fellow of the British Academy of Management (2013-), and Fellow of the Learned Society of Wales (2014-).
Delbridge has made significant contributions to the academic community through editorial work as Editor in Chief of Research in the Sociology of Work, and previously as Associate Editor for Academy of Management Review and Organization. He has served on numerous influential panels including the HEFCE REF Interdisciplinary Advisory Panel (2017-2020), Research England Strength in Places Fund Assessment Panel (2018-), ESRC Strategic Advisory Network (2018-), and UKRI's Future Leaders Fellowship Panel College (2020-). His work on the Cardiff Capital Region Challenge Fund demonstrates practical application of his research on innovation policy.
As co-convenor of the Centre for Innovation Policy and leader in developing Cardiff's Social Science Research Park, Delbridge has been instrumental in creating institutional structures that bridge academic research and practical innovation challenges. His work with SPARK represents a significant effort to position social science research as central to innovation ecosystems, challenging traditional views that prioritize STEM disciplines in innovation policy.
