Rick Anderson

Rick Anderson is a Professor in the Department of Mathematics and Computer Science at Eastern Illinois University (EIU). His research focuses on instructional strategies for geometric reasoning, particularly in rural educational contexts. He holds a B.S.Ed. in Mathematics and B.A. in Music from Valley City State University, an M.S. in Mathematics from Montana State University, and a Ph.D. in Mathematics Education from Portland State University.

Anderson’s research emphasizes rural mathematics education, including curriculum accessibility and student motivation in advanced courses. He teaches undergraduate courses such as Mathematics for Elementary Teachers II, Teaching Mathematics in Grades PreK-6, and Teaching Mathematics in the Middle Grades. He has served as an editor for Mathematics Teacher: Learning & Teaching PreK-12 since 2000 and holds editorial roles in other academic journals.

His publications explore geometric reasoning through classroom discourse (e.g., Geometry Chats), rural high school mathematics course-taking patterns, and the role of technology in education.
