Richard Youngs is a Professor of International and European Politics at the University of Warwick's School of Politics and International Studies (PAIS), serving on a part-time basis since 2004. He holds dual appointments as a Senior Associate at Carnegie Europe, where he actively publishes policy analyses, blogs, and essays. His academic background includes a BA (Hons) from Cambridge University and MA/PhD from Warwick University.
Youngs' research focuses on democracy promotion, European Union foreign policy, and global governance challenges. Key themes include democratic resilience in post-Soviet states, EU energy security, climate transition geopolitics, and the EU's role in mitigating democratic backsliding. His work bridges academic analysis with policy-oriented research, addressing contemporary issues like pandemic governance and geopolitical shifts in energy markets.
He has authored influential books such as Democratic Crossroads: Transformations in 21st Century Politics (2024), Geoliberal Europe and the Test of War (2024), and Rebuilding European Democracy (2021), which critically assess Europe's geopolitical positioning and democratic institutions in an increasingly multipolar world.
Youngs' recent publications explore EU energy crises, the intersection of climate change and security, and the evolving dynamics between democratic and authoritarian states. His interdisciplinary approach integrates political theory with real-world policy analysis, contributing to both academic discourse and practical governance strategies.
