Dr Richard Williams is a Senior Lecturer at Queen's University Belfast in the School of Medicine, Dentistry and Biomedical Sciences, affiliated with the Patrick G Johnston Centre for Cancer Research. He leads the Drug Discovery team and focuses on protease chemical biology, small molecule inhibitors, and drug design targeting cancers and respiratory diseases. He collaborates extensively on projects like Cathepsin S inhibitors for cystic fibrosis and Legumain inhibitors for prostate cancer. His work aligns with UN Sustainable Development Goals related to health and innovation. Williams has contributed to over 50 publications and holds patents in drug discovery.
Research Interests: Drug discovery, protease inhibitors, epigenetics, and translational medicine. Current projects include developing inhaled MPro inhibitors for SARS-CoV-2 and structural biology collaborations via CRUK networks. He accepts PhD students in medicinal chemistry and biochemistry.
Notable Collaborations: With Professors Chris Scott, Paul Mullan, and international partners like Wroclaw University. Active in grant-funded projects such as the Future Medicines Institute and cystic fibrosis-related research.
