Dr. Richard Waller is a Senior Lecturer in Physical Geography at the School of Life Sciences, Keele University. As Course Director for Geography Dual and Single Honours, he has been integral to academic leadership since joining in 2001. His research explores glacial and periglacial environments, focusing on glacier-permafrost interactions, basal ice deformation, and glacial erosion processes.
- PhD in debris-rich basal ice from Southampton
- Postdoctoral Research Fellowship in Glaciology at Greenwich
His fieldwork spans Alaska, Iceland, and Canada, producing significant publications in Nature Communications, Geomorphology, and Permafrost and Periglacial Processes. Collaborative work with Peter Knight and others has advanced understanding of glaciohydraulic supercooling and sediment-landform associations.
Recent research trends show emphasis on:
- Glacier-permafrost coupling mechanisms
- Impact of climate change on glacial systems
- Geoconservation through Staffordshire Geotrail leaflets
- International education collaboration (England-China teaching initiative)
- Application of UAV technology in geomorphological analysis
Dr. Waller actively supervises PhD/MSc students and participates in science communication at the British Science Festival. He also contributes to geoconservation through site management plans for key locations like Four Ashes, UK.
