Dr. Iestyn Barr is a Senior Lecturer in Glaciology/Glaciovolcanology at Manchester Metropolitan University. His research focuses on glacier-volcano interactions, climate change impacts on glaciers, and glacial geomorphology across diverse environments including Antarctica, Siberia, the Himalayas, and Kamchatka. He co-leads the IAVCEI and IACS joint commission on Volcano-Ice Interactions and serves as Scientific Editor for the Journal of Glaciology.
- Co-chair, IAVCEI-IACS Joint Commission
- Scientific Editor, Journal of Glaciology
Research Interests: Barr specializes in glacial environments influenced by volcanism and climate change. His work explores volcanic impacts on glaciers using satellite data, glacier responses to warming trends, and glacial landforms as paleoclimate indicators. He applies drones and machine learning for high-resolution glacial mapping.
Scientific Awards:
- Leverhulme Trust Research Grant (2019-2024)
- NERC-funded projects spanning UK-Iceland, UK-Greenland, and Arctic Office collaborations
- EU INTERACT Transnational Access Grants (2014, 2017)
- British Society for Geomorphology Research Grant (2016)
Advising & Grants: Barr has supervised multidisciplinary projects on glacial retreat, volcanic impacts, and climate modeling. His grants include NERC UK-Iceland Bursary (2024-2025) for lake drainage studies and EPSRC Research Grant (2015-2018) for glacial-volcano interactions.
