Richard W. Besdine, MD, is a Professor of Health Services, Policy and Practice and Professor of Medicine at Brown University. He holds dual affiliations with the Brown School of Public Health and Alpert Medical School. His academic roles include former Director of the Division of Geriatrics and Palliative Medicine and founding Director of the UConn Center on Aging. He has served in federal roles, including Chief Medical Officer at CMS, and currently serves on the Board of Directors of Neighborhood Health Plan of Rhode Island.
Education: B.S. (Cum Laude) from Haverford College (1961), M.D. from University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine (1965), followed by training in Internal Medicine, Infectious Diseases, and Geriatrics at Harvard Medical School and Beth Israel Hospital. He trained in Geriatrics under Sir Ferguson Anderson in Glasgow (1972).
Research focuses on aging, Alzheimer's disease, nursing home quality, and geriatric medicine. Key initiatives include the NIH Older Americans Independence Center and international collaborations on elderly care. His work bridges academic research, policy, and healthcare delivery systems.
Notable awards include the Best Doctors in America recognition (1990–2019), Milton Hamolsky Lifetime Achievement Award, and Morgagni Medal. His grants exceed $10M, spanning geriatric education, hip fracture co-management, and aging policy.
Teaching contributions include curriculum development in geriatrics at Harvard, UConn, and Brown, with a focus on interdisciplinary training and communication skills. He advises on medical student programs and mentors fellows in geriatric medicine.
Led the Center for Gerontology and Healthcare Research and collaborated with institutions like the Rhode Island Quality Institute to improve elderly care systems.
