Dr. Richard Velasco is an Assistant Professor of Mathematics Education at the University of Oklahoma's Jeannine Rainbolt College of Education. His research focuses on rehumanizing mathematics education through equity-centered approaches, particularly for Indigenous and marginalized communities. He leads the 'Amplifying Indigenous Micronesian Intelligence for Data Science (MINDS)' project, funded by the National Academy of Education and Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation.
Education: B.S. (Dual in Mathematics & Secondary Education, University of Guam), M.Ed. (Curriculum & Instruction, University of Saint Mary), Ph.D. (Curriculum & Instruction - STEM Education, Texas Tech University).
Research emphasizes equitable STEM experiences, teacher advocacy, and culturally relevant pedagogy. He co-edits The Electronic Journal for Research in Science and Mathematics Education. Recent grants include $113k for MINDS and $2.5k from OU's Ed Cline Award.
Awarded National Board Certification (201X) and Presidential Award (201X) for teaching excellence during his 12-year secondary math teaching career in Guam and Washington. Advocacy work includes exploring STEM teacher leadership during/after pandemic disruptions.
Lab/Team Affiliations: Collaborates with Indigenous CHamoru educators in Guam/Saipan for data science curriculum development. Active in OU's Center for Leadership Ethics & Change and the K20 Center.
