Richard Svoboda serves as Chair of the Woodwinds Department at New England Conservatory (NEC) since Fall 2011 and Principal Bassoonist of the Boston Symphony Orchestra (BSO) since 1989, holding the Edward A. Taft chair. He is also current faculty at Tanglewood Music Center and previously held positions at Symphony School of America and Grand Teton Orchestral Seminar.
His academic foundation includes a Bachelor of Music from the University of Nebraska under William Winstead, George Berry, and Gary Echols.
As a performer-educator, Svoboda specializes in bassoon artistry within orchestral and chamber contexts. His notable BSO concerto appearances feature John Williams’s Five Sacred Trees (conducted by Williams) and the Weber Concerto under Seiji Ozawa, reflecting deep expertise in both classical repertoire and contemporary works. His pedagogical approach emphasizes technical mastery and interpretive depth for woodwind students.
He actively contributes to the Boston Symphony Chamber Players, expanding his artistic impact through collaborative performances that bridge orchestral precision with chamber music intimacy.
