Professor Richard Reeve serves as Professor of Population and Ecosystem Health within the School of Biodiversity, One Health and Veterinary Medicine at the University of Glasgow. He is an elected Academic Staff member on Court (Academic Services) and co-director of the award-winning Boyd Orr Centre for Population and Ecosystem Health, which synthesises interdisciplinary research on ecological health of populations and ecosystems. His work bridges mathematical modeling, artificial intelligence, and life sciences with significant contributions to biodiversity measurement, viral evolution, and FAIR data pipelines.
Reeve's research interests span biodiversity modeling across biological scales from genetic to ecosystem levels, with particular focus on developing measures to characterize biodiversity change, creating digital twins for plant biodiversity to predict climate change impacts, and establishing FAIR (Findable, Accessible, Interoperable, Reusable) data pipelines for ecological modeling. He applies these approaches to landscape decision-making in UK peatlands through collaborations with NatureScot and Natural Resources Wales, while also working on viral antigenic diversity for vaccine development with FAO, WHO, and OIE. His mathematical interests include spatial and temporal partitioning of diversity and identifying novel ecosystem areas.
His publication record demonstrates consistent high-impact contributions across ecology, virology, and computational biology, with recent work showing strong integration of mathematical modeling with real-world applications in pandemic response, biodiversity conservation, and veterinary epidemiology. The articles reveal a clear trajectory toward increasingly sophisticated integration of computational methods with ecological and epidemiological data, particularly through FAIR data principles and digital twin technologies.
- Co-director of award-winning Boyd Orr Centre for Population and Ecosystem Health
- Expert guidance provided to FAO, WHO, OIE, and UK's Office for Environmental Protection
- Significant contributions to viral evolution research informing vaccine development
Reeve leads multiple major research initiatives including the Boyd Orr Centre and has secured substantial funding from EPSRC, STFC, NERC, BBSRC, and Wellcome Trust for projects spanning pandemic response (RAMP VIS), plant biodiversity modeling under climate change, and FAIR data pipeline development. His work on the FAIR Data Pipeline traces scientific data from collection through to policy advice, demonstrating strong translational impact. Current grants include the EOSC FAIR IMPACT project (2024) and Climate Change AI funding (2023-2024) for data extraction from plant trait literature.
As co-director of the Boyd Orr Centre, Reeve leads an interdisciplinary research hub that connects mathematical modeling with ecological and veterinary sciences. The Centre's work integrates expertise across biodiversity measurement, disease ecology, and environmental change, with strong emphasis on practical applications for policy and conservation.
